Edward Hopper began this painting in August of 1944, but it was completed when he returned to New York in December.
The boat in the painting was named after a young friend of Hopper's who often took them sailing in Wellfleet harbor.
Hopper was inspired to paint this by sailing with Martha and Reggie McKeen of Wellfleet, a much younger couple. He had been forced to give up sailing on his own by his wife, who thought it was too dangerous.
Hopper adored sailing from the time he built a catboat as a teenager. It fed his love of solitude. As a boy, he sketched numerous sailing boats in his hometown of Nyack, New York.
